Uxbridge, ONT- Alex Welsh and the AW7R/Kenwood Electronics Suzuki team capped off an up and down 2012 Mopar Canada Superbike season with a victory at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP) double header weekend.
After struggling with an electrical glitch on their primary Suzuki GSX-R 1000 in qualifying, the team would find themselves starting both races at CTMP way back on the third row in the 8th position. Not one to be discouraged, Alex was confident in his ability to charge through the field to challenge for victory.
As the riders set out on the warm up lap for Saturday’s race, Alex knew he was in for a tough race. With a good launch and some strategic passes early on, Welsh found himself in 3rd position as he rounded the 4th lap of the 20-lap contest. Trailing behind the streaking duo of Jordan Szoke and Kevin Lacombe, Welsh was able to put his head down and track them down just before the halfway point of the race. As the battle ensued for the remainder of the race, Welsh came up 0.561 of a second shy of victory in 3rd place.
Going into Sunday’s final, Welsh and the AW7R/Kenwood Electronics crew made some changes to the motorcycle based of the feedback and knowledge from Saturdays race. Welsh again found himself coming from the back of the pack to challenge in Sunday’s final. Taking advantage of the changes made to his Suzuki, Welsh was able make it to battle for the lead using much less effort than in Saturday race. Able to relax in 3rd position as the lead duo battle battled hard for the entire 20-lap event, Welsh was able to carefully study his opponents and capitalize in the last corner of the final lap to dive underneath to take the first national superbike win of his career.
Alex Welsh – “I really could not have asked for a better weekend. After we had our problems in qualifying I really questioned what we had done to deserve all this bad luck. However, we all persevered and came from the back in both races to get a 3rd place on Saturday and my first superbike win on Sunday. It was just a really special day for me and I cannot think of a better way to end the season. Although our results in the championship don’t exactly show it, I’m really proud of the team and results considering all the hard luck we’ve encountered. We had the fastest lap of the race in 4 of the 6 races this season so we can definitely hold our heads high and know we can fight for the championship in 2013.”
Alex would like to take the time to personally thank his crew of Willie Vass, Payam Shafinia and his dad for all their hard work and sacrifices throughout the year. Also, a big thank you must go out to all the sponsors that made this possible, CSBK staff, corner workers, marshalls, medics and fans for all their dedication and support.
