Metcalfe logs another perfect 1-1 weekend at Gopher Dunes
Kamloops, BC(July16, 2013) After a three week break, the 2013 Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross Series resumed, at Courtland, Ontario’s Gopher Dunes Raceway and coming off of three straight overall wins, things were looking good for Brett Metcalfe as the noted sand specialist came into the deep sands of Gopher Dunes, and he certainly didn’t disappoint.
Getting a good start in moto one, Metty, worked his way past early leaders, Tyler Medaglia and Mike Sottile to grab the lead and never looked back, riding off to the moto win. Moto two would prove more of a challenge for the points leader, as he would fall victim to a first turn crash and be forced to remount near the back of the pack. Picking himself up, the Australian put his head down and went to work, picking riders off on his way to the front of the pack. With only a couple laps left, Metcalfe made his way into the lead and took the checkered flag to keep his winning streak alive.
Understandably, Metcalfe was happy with how his day went, “I thought today was pretty awesome. I was excited to be coming to a sand track and felt good all day. First moto, I got a good start, got into the lead at about the 10 minute mark and just got into a good rhythm and save energy – it was super hot. Second moto – went down in the first turn. I got up and just tried to put on a big charge – went as hard as I could and managed to win the moto. It was awesome, I was going so hard, it was so hot, and the track was really rough so I was hurting. Was good to go 1-1, I’m really happy.”
With the win, Metcalfe stretched his lead atop the MX1 Championship standings to sixty points.
It was an up and down day for fellow MX1 rider, Teddy Maier. In moto one, Maier worked his way up to third to join Metcalfe on the podium. Unfortunately, in moto two, a first turn crash left him with a broken radiator and was unable to complete the moto.
In MX2, point’s leader, Austin Politelli, started off his day well as he qualified number one. In the first moto, he was working his way to the front when another rider went down in front of him, leaving him nowhere to go and sending him to the ground. He remounted and charged back to second by moto’s end. Again in the second moto, he hit a downed rider and damaged his bike. He was able to remount and finish the race. Even with the second moto crash, Politelli still holds a commanding thirty-four point lead atop the MX2 standings.
The series now heads north to our Nation’s capital of Ottawa for the next round, at Sand Del Lee in Richmond, Ontario. For more information on the Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross National series, visit www.cmrcracing.com
