Toronto, ONT- A trying weekend for Alex Welsh and the AW7R/Kenwood Electronics Suzuki Team after suffering a technical issue while leading the race relegates Welsh to a 3rd place finish at Round 3 of the Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship at Atlantic Motosport Park.
Welsh qualified his Suzuki GSX-R 1000 in 2nd position and was confident heading into the 22 lap final at the track nicknamed "Shubie". As the race got underway, Welsh blasted off the line and quickly jumped into the lead turning the fastest lap of the race, a 1:07.861, on his second flying lap. Welsh would set the pace at the front for the first half of the race until lap 11 when a malfunction with his shifter caused his ignition to intermittently cut in and out. For the remainder of the race, Welsh was forced to take care of his motorcycle eventually soldiering across the line in 3rd place.
Alex Welsh - "Obviously I am just absolutely gutted, again. Heading out to the east coast is always a test on man and machine. Shubie is definitely the most demanding circuit we go to and we go to great lengths to ensure we`re ready. I was confident heading into the race and it started well. I felt my riding was really strong, my bike was working great and I felt really confident leading the race. Around the half-way point my bike just died coming onto the front straight and those two just blew by me. I knew right then my race was over and I had to regroup to make sure I got the bike home okay but it was pretty sketchy with the power cutting in and out. It`s definitely frustrating and it makes it difficult from a championship perspective, but all we can do now is move forward and focus on winning the final 3 races. We`re heading to my home track next and my Suzuki`s are definitely fast there so I`m going to do my best to put on a good show."
The AW7R/Kenwood Electronics Suzuki team will take the next week to regroup before the series rejoins for the 4th and 5th rounds of the Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, August 10-11.
